One of our goals at Do Good Farm is to close as many waste loops as possible, where waste from one thing becomes input to another thing.
If you remember from science class, energy is neither created nor destroyed, but only transformed. As living creatures, all we do is convert one form of energy into another over and over and over again.
Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) are a huge part of making that happen for at least 2 reasons:
1)It is one of the only composting methods that you can put animal scraps into. You shouldn’t do that with regular composting or worm composting. They make quick work of any waste.
2)It’s a great food supply for other animals on the farm, like your chickens. If you design the composting bin correctly, it’s even self harvesting. When it’s time for the larvae to become adults, they seek higher ground, so we have ramps in our bin where they crawl up and fall into collection bins.
